I think every muslim has had this happen to them. It s time to pray and you must make your wudu.......in a public bathroom (dun, dun ,dun). Just kidding, it is not that bad, its just people just don't get it, they usually think you are just being "Muslim" aka a weirdo
Muslims believe full-heatedly in cleanliness, There actually some hadith (sayings/stories of the prophet) that say that cleanliness is half our religion. If you look at the origin of soap which was first made out of olive oil, it was the Mesopotamians aka Muslims, the people who believed in god. But the greatest proof of all are the verses from the Quran,
"Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves" (2:222)
Now what are these muslims doing in the bathroom? yes, they are cleaning themselves but they are also getting ready for prayer. This process is called- wudu, which is the washing of the body before prayer. Muslims actually cannot pray without making wudu.
"O you who believe! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads (with wet hands), and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. And if you are in a state of major ritual impurity (janaba), purify yourselves (by taking a bath). And if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you comes from the answering of call of nature, or you have had contact with women, and you find no water, then go to clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with some of it. Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you and to perfect His grace upon you that you may give thanks" (Al-Maidah :6)
CRASH COURSE IN WUDU (http://www.islamawareness.net/Wudu/performing.html):
1. First make Niyyah (Intention) that you are making Wudu' for Salah and begin saying. "Bismillah.." (In the name of Allah, the most merciful and the most kind). Wash both hands up to the wrist three times, making sure that water has reached between the fingers. 2. Put a handful of water into your mouth and rinse it thoroughly three times
3, 4 Sniff water into your nostrils three times to clean them and then wash the tip of the nose.
5,6 Wash your face three times from right ear to left ear and from forehead to throat.
7. Wash your right arm and then your left arm thoroughly from wrist up to elbow three times.8 a & b) Move the wet palms over the head from the top of forehead to the back of the head.
9) Pass the wet tips of index fingers into the grooves and holes of both ears and also pass the wet thumbs behind the ears
10. Finally, wash both feet to the ankles starting from the right, making sure that water has reached between the toes and all other parts of the feet. |
At the end of the above steps recite:
"Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh."
Meaning: I testify that there is no god but Allah and He is One and has no partner and I also testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
What Invalidates Wudu:
-sleep or unconsciousness of any kind
-using the restroom or farting
-flow of blood or any bodily substance
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU:
Next time you see that Muslim super soaking in the bathroom, just know that they are trying to cleaned for prayer. We aren't weird but most definitely clean.
Also for Muslims, this was a great recap of the importance of wudu :) :)
